Back-to-School 101

Tips from Little Capers’ Leading Superhero, Bolt Boy, Make the Back-to-School
Transition Smooth and Safe for Young Children

LOS ANGELES (August 13, 2010) – It’s time for school again and your child is probably feeling a little anxious, nervous or excited to start the new school year.  Many kids feel nervous or a little scared on the first day of school because of all the uncertainties and new experiences they’ll be faced with such as new teachers, trying to make new friends and possibly a brand new school which means a new, unfamiliar route to and from campus.
Little Capers, the one-of-a-kind superhero brand that ignites creativity in children and inspires them to unleash their inner hero, is here to alleviate those fears with Bolt Boy’s back-to-school one-stop tip shop.

  1. Transition – Fearing the Unknown…Bolt Boy says:
    1. Never fear!  All of your friends are here!  Starting a new school year is fun and exciting because you get to see all of your old friends and make new ones.
    2. Ask questions!  If you’re worried about how to get to school, what will happen during the school day, who your teacher will be, where you’ll eat lunch or even what to do at recess…find your inner superhero courage and ask all of your questions.  Having some answers will help!
    3. A superhero is always prepared!  Talk to your parents about getting ready for school to start.  Ask them if you can help pick out the supplies you’ll need for class, new clothes, help pack your lunch bag and ask if they’ll help you practice getting up and ready on time the week before school starts.
    4. Choose a superhero secret item!  Are you having trouble feeling as comfortable at school as you do at home?  Put on your Little Capers superhero cape, find a small thing that reminds you of home and keep it in your pocket or backpack to remind you that you always have a little piece of “home” with you.
  2. Classroom Behavior – Following the Rules…Bolt Boy says:
    1. Superheroes do what’s right!  Superheroes lead by example, which means, when your teacher says it’s time to be quiet and work on a project, true superheroes get to work right away.
    2. Use all of your senses!  Knowledge is power and superheroes learn to use all of their senses to gain knowledge.  So listen to your teacher with your ears, watch what they do with your eyes and use your superhero brain power to become the smartest and most clever hero you can be!
    3. Be kind and helpful!  True superheroes want to help others and by using manners and being nice to your classmates you’ll put yourself on the right track.
  3. Friends – Making New Ones…Bolt Boy says:
    1. Smile and say “hello!”  You might be surprised at how far a simple smile and “hello” will go.  The new kid in town just might end up being your new best friend!
    2. Be positive!  Superheroes look at every situation and try to see the good stuff, right?  Your attitude can play a big role in how other kids treat you so having a positive superhero outlook is important.
    3. Be thoughtful!  Doing something nice for someone else is a part of every superhero’s rule book.  Try inviting your new friend to play with you at recess or to sit with you and your group of friends at lunch.
  4. Sharing – It’s Not Always Easy…Bolt Boy says:
    1. Take turns!  If your friend wants to play with a toy that belongs to you, try taking turns playing with the toy and make taking turns a part of the game.
    2. Be creative!  Is your friend not sharing with you?  Use your superhero imagination and create a different game to play so you don’t have to fight with your friend and can keep having fun.
    3. Trade!  Maybe your friend has a toy you want to play with and you have a toy your friend wants to play with…why not trade for a while?  Remember a superhero leads by example and if you share with your friend, they’re more likely to share with you the next time they have a toy you’d like to play with.
  5. Conflict Resolution – Superheroes Don’t Start Fights…Bolt Boy says:
    1. Stop and be open!  If your superhero senses make you feel like a fight is going to start with a friend, try to stop and think.  Put yourself in their shoes, ask why they are upset or let them know why you’re upset.  When you and your friend understand each other it makes your friendship stronger.  Every good superhero has a good sidekick!
    2. Be calm!  When people are upset or angry they might say or do things they shouldn’t do.  Dig deep into your superhero strength and try not to fight.  Remember, superheroes don’t start fights, they try to solve problems.
    3. Work together!  When it comes to superheroes and their friends, working together to find a compromise, or a solution, to the problem helps them learn good teamwork.  Even superheroes need help sometimes and being a good team player is something all superheroes need to know how to do!
  6. Safety – Even Superheroes Need to be Careful…Bolt Boy says:
    1. Stranger danger!  Even superheroes need to be careful!  Strangers can be very dangerous so listen to your parents.  Don’t talk to strangers and if a stranger tries to talk to you, run back toward the school and yell for help.
    2. Bullies are the bad guys!  Bullies get their power from hurting others but superheroes find power and strength by helping others and asking for help when they need it.  If you or one of your friends is dealing with a bully, be a brave superhero, tell the bully to stop and choose to walk away.  Ignoring the bully takes their power away so try not to show them you’re angry or upset.  Be sure to tell an adult what happened too!
    3. Be street smart!  It doesn’t matter if you’re walking to school with friends or riding a bike, the bus or in a car…knowing the rules of the road can keep you safe.  Never take shortcuts, always check both ways before crossing the street and don’t forget to wear all the safety gear your parents gave you.
